Mayor de Blasio Gives $15 Million to Made Fashion Week

New York’s Mayor, Bill de Blasio is the latest supporter of high fashion. The mayor has lauded the industry’s profitability as well as the thousands of jobs that the industry provides, and announced earlier this week that he is pledging $15 million for the sake of fashion. That’s three times more money than ever before and the money will be given in the form of internships, grants, and technology.

The mayor made his pledge at the Made Fashion Week kickoff event put on by Milk Studios. This pledge comes right after the announcement that New York Fashion Week will be leaving the Lincoln Center and also be acquiring Made. According to Observer’s Style section, de Blasio said “In very real economic terms, this industry is more vital than ever [...] When you believe in something, you invest in it. The city of New York is tripling our investment in fashion initiatives.”

Considering that New York’s fashion industry is said to generate $2 billion in annual tax revenue and create $11 billion in wages, $15 million is a small price to pay for fashion.
